Dear members:

I hope you and your families are doing well after the inclement weather situations that we have experienced lately, Given the natural disasters of both Hurricanes Irma and Maria passing through the island of Puerto Rico and causing such a devastating damage that resulted in many human fatalities and the destruction of most of the infrastructure, we have had numerous requests from many of our members that want to find ways to help. After convoking the TBLAMS board of directors, we overwhelmingly agreed to start a campaign to help with Puerto Rico relief efforts.

After doing an analysis money properly channeled is the best way to help. Experts who have dealt with disasters before say people need to be careful about how they contribute to disaster relief and when. Cash donations are almost always preferred over items — such as blankets, medications, food, clothing and stuffed animals — often sent into overwhelmed disaster areas by well-meaning donors. Nonprofit groups say in this case that they're also preparing for an extremely long recovery and that the needs almost certainly will change over time. They say that sometimes half of the food sent may never be used as the US government and local municipalities receiving federal funds will provide those.

Also we want to partner with a reputable, verifiable and trusted agency that will use the funds properly and wisely since there are many spontaneous fundraising campaigns online that may not be properly coordinated nor legitimate.

After taking into consideration all these factors the best way that we can help is by supporting the official fundraising relief campaign of the government of Puerto Rico called "Unidos Por Puerto Rico". It is coordinated by the office of the first lady of Puerto Rico Beatriz Isabel Rossello, the office of the governor Ricardo Rossello, Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) and the private sector with sponsors such as First Bank, Bacardi, Walgreens, Coca Cola, El Nuevo Dia, Banco Popular, Walmart, Plaza Las Americas, Burger King, among others. The fundraising event will take place in October 1, 2017 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center at 2PM. You may choose to directly donate to the "Unidos por Puerto Rico" fund but our desire is to collect the money and deliver our check donation personally to the first lady as the "Tampa Bay Latin American Medical Society" showing our support as a group. Below is a link that will direct you to donate to our Paypal account so that we can collect the money. I count on your support and ask for your help.
